Spring Waterfowl Count South Shore IBA

Volunteers spread across the Prince Edward County South Shore Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) on Sat. Apr 2 to get a one-day snapshot of the birds in the IBA, especially the waterfowl in the waters of Lake Ontario and South Bay.  By far the most common were Long-tailed Ducks, but we also counted Greater Scaup, Bufflehead, Red-breasted Merganser, Common Merganser, White-winged Scoter, Bonaparte's Gull and Mute Swan.  Some interesting sightings were also made of Little Gull, Black Scoter, Red-necked Grebe, Horned Grebe, American Woodcock, Ring-necked Duck, Tree Swallow, Swamp Sparrow and Belted Kingfisher.  Many thanks to the 13 volunteers who made this a great event.
