Queen's prof. wows crowd at PEPtBO dinner
Dr. Stephan Lougheed from Queen's University entertained the crowd at the PEPtBO dinner on Saturday November 2 with descriptions of his experiential style of teaching in wide ranging geographical regions. Some of his students travel to Africa and Central America to learn about biodiversity and human effects on species at risk. Dr. Lougheed is also the director of the Queen's Biological Station and has an active research Laboratory at Queens. One notable research project carried out with fellow researchers at Queen's and from universities across Canada involves a study of the human impact on Polar Bear populations.
The fund raising dinner was Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory’s 18th annual event. Attendees enjoyed excellent cuisine prepared by Wheelhouse catering at the View Restaurant at the Picton Golf Club.
A Highlight of the evening was the drawing of the winning ticket for the Young Banders’ Fund lottery. PEPtBO organizers invited Anne Lougheed to make the draw. Gabrielle Holowacz was the winner of the $5000 prize. While pleased Gabrielle was heard to exclaim – “I’m shocked, just shocked” . Hers was the second lottery ticket sold. The lottery supports stipends and some travelling expenses for the young people that come from all over Canada and Europe to learn about our Canadian migratory birds and the monitoring that we do at Prince Edward Point.
The dinner committee was delighted with the results of the evening and is already hard at work planning the 19th annual PEPtBO Fall Fund Raising Dinner and Silent Auction.
