Position: Avian Intern

Location: Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory, Prince Edward ON

Duration: June 1 – Aug 31, 2022 (dates can be flexible)

Site and Job Description: Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory (PEPtBO) is located on Lake Ontario, 225 km east of Toronto and 1.5 hour drive from Kingston, Ontario, in the Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area (NWA) and the Prince Edward County South Shore Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA). Run by a volunteer Board of Directors, this busy station bands 10,000+ birds of 100+ species each year.  More than 260 species and forms have been observed at the observatory over the last ten years.  The NWA is open to the public and the Observatory has hundreds of visitors a year. PEPtBO adheres to the NABC guidelines for banding and follows a standardized protocol operation throughout the summer. Summer banding is conducted, following the Measuring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) protocol. Avian point counts will be conducted throughout Prince Edward County.

Qualifications: Applicants for this position should possess experience banding passerines and also be proficient with bird ID by sight and song. Some knowledge of and experience with northeastern bird identification and/or ageing and sexing is requested, as is an ability to quickly and accurately take measurements. Ideal applicants will have experience with setting up, using and maintaining mist nets, and implementing a monitoring protocol. Applicants must maintain high scientific and ethical standards. Access to a vehicle will be beneficial. The job may involve a partial online (remote) component, depending upon the needs of the station and skillset of the successful applicant. This online component may involve social media support, knowledge translation and report-writing.

Compensation: Accommodation and food are supplied on site. Pay will be commensurate with experience. Mileage will be paid for work-related travel.
